A Positive Winning Philosophy
There are many ways to win. Some methods are more admirable than others. There are some wins that actually cost more in human terms than people would pay, if they knew at the time. Some ways of winning will get you a short-term victory but a long-term loss.
When all the theories are tried, tested, and evaluated, only one approach to winning has long term benefits that reach far beyond the scoreboard. This approach is known by many names, but in every case certain characteristics distinguish it from the other more limited versions.
Here's what to look for when judging the pathway to winning:
- Does it build up people?
- Does it encourage growth and learning?
- Does it challenge perceived limits without tearing down self-esteem?
- Are life lessons included and promoted?
- Will those involved have reason to be proud of the results years later?
This five-question test can be used by both coaches and parents in assessing the true nature of the behaviors and messages delivered to young athletes during their sports experience. If the answer is "yes" to each of the five questions, athletes are being treated to positive parenting and/or positive coaching. There is no better approach in producing excellence than the power of positive messages and the making of meaningful deposits in the emotional bank accounts of young athletes.
The Growing Champions philosophy includes five key principles for each leg of the "3-legged stool" of youth sports - Coaches, Parents, & Athletes. Check them out here!
